essentially spiritual character of His royalty. In the East, the mule, as well as the horse, is regarded as a noble animal; the ass, on the contrary, is despised there, as it is here. Comp. Wisd. 33 (36) 25 (24). Hence the manner in which Jesus was mounted must not be compared with that of Solomon (1 Kings 1:38), when he made his regal entry into Jerusalem upon the mule of David his father.
